This summer catch a few free flicks at the Bluffs Park in Malibu. Bring a picnic, a blanket and the whole family for some evening fun. Please refrain from bringing alcohol or smoking at the park since this is a family event.

Schedule for Summer 2010:
–> Saturday July 31st Free Willy: Escape From Pirate’s Cove (co-sponsored by the Malibu Public Library)

–> Saturday, August 28 – Seating and preshow begin at 7:00 pm with the movies beginning at dusk. More info at www.ci.malibu.ca.us.

History

Settled by the Chumash, Malibu was named "Humaliwo" or "the surf sounds loudly."

Abundant Spanish presence existed due to the California mission system. Few roads entered the area before 1929, when the state won a court case and built what is now known as the Pacific Coast Highway. May Rindge, a wealthy land owner, was forced to subdivide her property and begin selling and leasing lots. The Rindge house, known as the Adamson House, is now part of Malibu Creek State Park.

In 1926 Rhoda May Rindge created a small ceramic tile factory that produced decorative tiles. Later burned to ground in 1932, it could not recover from the effects of the Great Depression and a steep downturn in Southern California construction projects. Malibu tile is still considered highly collectible and may be seen at the Adamson House and Serra Retreat.

Disasters

Known for its destructive, cyclical fires and mudslides, Malibu maintains a long history of natural disasters. Possibly it's most destructive in terms of acreage was the Dayton fire that consumed 44,000 acres and destroyed 15 homes in Paradise Cove.
